A Green Belt is not a toy! (#76)

A Green Belt is not a toy!

When I was young, the hot, hip toy was the Big Trak, a mini lunar vehicle. Everyone I knew had a Big Trak.

Christmas came around and I was ecstatic to find that I had received one. Of course, toys like this have a comprehensive list of instructions. The Big Trak toy had the potential to carry out more than one hundred commands. Being a kid on Christmas day, it's easy to believe I lost the instructions. Without the internet and YouTube, I was only able to learn a few simple commands. And I only completed this by trial and error.

I could make it drive forwards, backward, and turn to the right. These three commands were awesome at first! I would trip my dad when he was walking, scare my sister, and chase the dog. Eventually, though, I grew tired of the toy's limited functionality and quit playing with it.

When a Green Belt becomes the Leadership Team’s new toy, what happened with the Big Trak will happen to the Green Belt because the Leadership Team doesn’t know how to deploy Continuous Improvement efforts. Without proper utilization and understanding, the Green Belt will fail to get the ROI they were expecting.

Eventually, leadership believes that Lean Six Sigma won’t work in their company, the failure is blamed on the belt, it’s not the right time for improvements in the organization, but the real fault is due to leadership. They opened the toy without reading the instructions and wound up with just another toy in their toy box.

To avoid this kind of failure, a solid foundation must be initiated first.

The foundation is created with these seven steps:
  • Building Plan
  • Organizational Buy-In
  • CI Management
  • Understanding of Organizational KPIs
  • Involvement of Trained Champions
  • Inclusion of Project Hoppers
  • Subject Matter Expert Training
Each of these steps needs to be completed before a Belt can make real, lasting change. For more info on “How to build the foundation for Lean and Six Sigma” visit https://sixsigmadsi.com/how-to-build-the-infrastructure-for-lean-and-six-sigma/
