Who knew they made movies about Lean 3P? (#69)

Who knew they made movies about Lean 3P?

A short while ago I was en route to DC to teach a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Course. As soon as that class was scheduled to finished, I would be heading down south to teach a Lean 3P event.

During the flight I was fine tuning our Lean 3P curriculum. To offer the best possible materials to our clients, I constantly update our curriculum. This particular piece I was working on was a step by step guide students should follow to complete 3P events once our class was complete. I was wracking my brain to figure out a super easy way to explain what 3P is.

I finally decided to watch a movie to clear my head and I decided to watch this free in-flight movie “The Founder,” which is about how McDonald’s was created. Not putting much stock into its plot, I put my headphones in and absent mindedly thought it would be good noise for me to sleep to.

The longer I watched, the more interested I became! I, myself, am an entrepreneur and can relate to Ray Crock and the lessons packed into this movie for business owners. When Ray first med Mac and Dick McDonald in 1954, it was at their tiny burger restaurant. He was amazed that they were able to make and serve his meal in less than a minute; given at the time the typical wait period was 30 minutes.

In the movie, Ray and the McDonald brothers go to dinner and tell Ray how they started McDonalds; using a chalk mock-up of their restaurant on a tennis court. They used this imaginary restaurant to act out different scenarios they would face in their restaurant; running through the process from the raw materials start to the finished order handed to the customer.

This scene was by far the greatest example of Lean 3P I have ever witnessed. To watch it for yourself visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-7cjdtrQ9Y&feature=youtu.be

“The Lean 3P Advantage: A Practitioner’s Guide to the Production Preparation Process” Author Allan Coletta, stated “Lean 3P (Production Preparation Process) is a LEAN event driven process for establishing updated products simultaneously with the employees that will create it.” This is the idea behind the McDonald Brother’s chalk restaurant out on their local tennis courts. They continuously worked with their employees to create the most effective flow in a cost effective kitchen environment.
