Apple Pay; the new Dollar Bill (#68)

Apple Pay; the new Dollar Bill.

My family relocated to Puerto Vallarta in Mexico last year. The beautiful scenery, rich culture, and friendly people are just a few of the several reasons we love our new hometown. On Thursday nights the Marina is the hub for market vendors with amazing handmade items for sale.

Last week my family and I visited the market where we found fresh, hot, handmade apple pies. Just like mom’s, right? This vendor had placed a sign in front that read “Pay De Manzana.” This translates to Apple Pie in English. Below “Pay De Manzana” they had written Apple Pay in English.

Being the tech savvy (lol) person that I am, I was stoked to be able to use my iphone’s Apple Pay Wallet to pay for the apple pies. After picking up a couple of sweet, smelling pies, I was ready to pay. I tried to hand her my phone and I said that I would be paying for the pies using Apple Pay. She looked at me. I looked at her. We looked at the pies. We looked at my phone. We looked back at each other, confusion creeping over both of our faces while my wife tried to hide her giggles. She leaned over to me and explained that it means Apple Pie, not Apple Pay. They vendor tried to translate “Pay De Manzana” to English so tourists would be able to understand. However, the vendor did not correctly translate “Pay” (the Spanish word for pie) and we had several awkward seconds of confused stares with each other.

What does this have to do with Lean Six Sigma? Usually some form of management will create work instructions for their employees, most of the time with some sort of image to describe an object or a process. However, the employee still makes mistakes. Why does this happen?

It is because management will create these work instructions without any help from the employee, in a way that doesn’t make sense to the employees, or even the customers, and expect them to completely understand the instructions given to them.

If the vendor had access to an English-speaking friend or something like Google Translate, this situation could have been avoided. My wife, who is fluent in Spanish, helped the vendor adjust the sign to correctly read Apple Pie instead of Apple Pay. We all had a good laugh as we thanked the vendor and took our pies home.
