You’ll shoot your eye out kid! (#59)
My dad’s favorite Christmas
movie is “The Christmas Story.” He has to watch it every single Christmas. My
mom’s favorite Christmas movie is “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” but I’ll
save that story for another blog. 😊
For any of you not familiar with
“The Christmas Story,” the main character Ralphie spends weeks listening to the
Little Orphan Annie Radio Show to collect pieces of a “secret” code. In this
particular scene, Ralphie cannot decipher the code without a special decoder
ring.
Sometimes as Six Sigma Practitioners,
we are in the same position that Ralphie is in. We struggle to solve the code
(problem in the process) but we are missing the “decoder ring” that will help
us decode the message the process is trying to tell us.
In this case, our “decoder ring”
is a Statistical Analyses. Statistical tools like Minitab and SAS have the
ability to perform the necessary Statistical Analyses to decode your message.
Our code is the data we collect from our process. You can keep track of your
data by using a Multi-Vari Data Collection sheet. Refer to the image below.
A Multi-Vari Data Collection Sheet uses one of
the main Six Sigma equations: Y=f(x1, x2, x3,…xn).
From this equation we know that the Y is a
function of the collected x’s. So for the image above, flight time is dependent
on all of the inputs or x’s. Each row of data is a “secret code” about the
statistical significance of the inputs (x) to the outputs (y). The majority of
people only know how to read the code by using statistics.
