The Minitab Time Series (#55)

If you want to measure the effect of the process you’re aiming to improve, then you MUST use Quantitative Data (metrics). Without quantitative data, you’re just trying to prove your opinion. Nobody wants to hear what your opinion is without data driven proof. Opinions can be wrong; which would leave room for error and misjudgment. Not to mention several questions from organizational stakeholders that you may not be able to answer.

Quantitative Data proven by a MSA is invincible. No room for error or misjudgment. Invulnerable and impenetrable. I have found that the optimal tool for keeping track of changes in outputs (Y) is the Time Series Plot.

When creating change to your process within a DMAIC stage, it should have a measurable effect. A Time Series Chart in Minitab will graphically plot these effects. Make sure you include the time scale to demonstrate the date of the improvement. Refer to image below.

This graphical image is an easy way for you to show the Organizational Stakeholders to show project progression.
To make a Time Series Plot in Minitab 17, like the image above, you first need to collect your data:

Now open the Time Series Plot by going to the Minitab menu Bar, select Graph, then select Time Series Plot. Select With Groups in the Time Series Plots dialogue box as referred to the image below. We graph them in groups so we can track each of the stages of the DMAIC.

Then, complete the “Time Series Plot: With Groups” dialogue box as reflected in the image below.

Select Time/Scale to include the time scale defined from the data in the column “Date.”

Once the “Time Series Plot: Time/Scale” Dialogue box opens select Stamp and select the “Date” column.

Select “Reference lines.” Put the number 35 under “Show reference lines at Y values.” The number put here should be the Y Value target. This value is found in the Goal Statement in your Project Charter.

Select “OK” then select “OK” again. The image below should be what you see in your Time Series Plot.
