Lean 5S: Order up! (#58)

This blog will describe the Second “S” in the Lean 5S Visual Management Event: Set in Order. It is the second blog of a five-blog series.

The first “S,” Sort, talks about how to remove unnecessary inputs or items to gain space. Once the clutter is removed, we can see what is truly important to the process. With more room to work, it will be easier to initiate the second “S” and Set everything in Order.

This “S” has one rule: Everything has a place and everything in its place. Imagine going to visit your cousin who just had orthopedic surgery. You walk in through the main entrance only to find there is no map, no directory, and no receptionist to guide you to the correct wing. You would either have to already know where you’re going or walk around until you happen to stumble upon it.

We have seen so many companies that would easily fit into this scenario. Now visualize walking into the hospital and there are several location maps, directional arrows, and signs to let you know where everything is located in the hospital. This type of environment is much easier to understand than the first.

This section of 5S is where the team needs to prioritize important items by their usage. Products, services, or information that the team uses often needs to be easily identified and readily accessible. Items that are used less often need to be identified and stored in a place that is still accessible, but not as important. This way we will be able to easily tell when something is out of place or missing. It also tells us where something belongs.

By setting things in order, it makes it less likely you will waste your time searching for something you need. How much time do you spend looking for something at work or at home? What are some examples of your experience with the second “S,” Set in order?
