Cross the finish line in your Six Sigma Project! (#44)

I am sure that you are familiar with the phrase “the shoemaker’s children always go barefoot.” In this scenario, we are the shoemaker. Lean and Six Sigma is an exciting philosophy and methodology! We, as instructors, often get carried away in teaching that we fail to remember that what we are teaching can enhance the results of the methodology and philosophy that we are teaching.

Let me explain. We can clearly see that the hardest “output” of Lean/ Six Sigma Deployments would be to reach persistent project conclusions. Sometimes instructors will get the ball rolling and the momentum of what we are teaching will cannon ball our new Belts and Champions into cold waters, without knowing where the shoreline is. We want you to slay your own dragon, but sometimes forget to teach you exactly how to yield your sword.

A Master Black Belt has a deep understanding of what we teach and how to deploy this philosophy and methodology in an organization. We, sometimes like your favorite (or least favorite) college professor, forget that YOU do not know and understand Lean and Six Sigma like we do. We often leave blank connections open and expect you to connect the dots.

We want you to ask questions if you don’t understand; but so many students undergo “information overload” that they can’t develop a question even if they wanted to. With this foggy “input,” students will return to their office and either 1. Regress to old processes and stall (sometimes indefinitely) their project completion or 2. Constantly seek advice from their instructor which leads to delayed project completion.

Hence, the finish line monster is born.

As a Lean Six Sigma professional, I wanted to develop a project to find a solution to our project completion process bottleneck. Our input (Y) will be Project Closure Rate. Our output (X) could be multiple aspects including anything along the lines of our educational programming, Lean Six Sigma Toolbox, or project structure.

The results of this project were pretty common sense, but now we have the data to back it up. Our students want to learn but they still require a guide for them to follow. We asked our customers (Voice of the Customer, VOC) “What can we do to make this system better?” To which they replied, “We don’t know where to start,” and “How do we know that we are doing our project right?”

Simple! Our solution is to create a project completion design that our students can follow. We call it the “Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Project Roadmap.”

You will find that the Roadmap has
-          A Six Sigma Green Belt Project Tollgate Review (comprehensive review for the DMAIC stages)
-          DMAIC Green Belt Project Flowchart
-          Six Sigma Green Belt Project Requirements PowerPoint Presentation
-          Six Sigma Green Belt Project PowerPoint Template

Does your company have any tools to ensure Project Completion?
