The Change Game! (#36)
Print your name on a marker board 10 times
with your primary hand. Keep time of how long it takes you to write your name 10
times. Do this exercise three times; writing your name for a total of 30 times.
Overall, your dominant handwriting should show to be consistent. You write with
your dominate hand all the time; so each time you write your name for this exercise,
it should take you about the same time every time.
Let’s switch it up and write your name with
your other hand. Print your name 10 times on the marker board, keeping time of
how long it takes you to write it. Repeat three times. As you would probably
expect, the first time you perform this exercise with your non-dominant hand,
it is a slow process. It is something you are not accustomed to, so performing
quickly or even well the first time around is challenging.
However, as you practice this exercise, your
handwriting with your non-dominant hand gets steadily better. It is the same
with any other kind of change. At first, it is awkward and an unnatural feeling.
As you continue and practice, you will steadily get better. It is natural for
people to be hesitant when it comes to change.
Often in a Lean Six Sigma Deployment, the
Change Agent will be told “that’s just the way it has always been” when it
comes to operating processes. A company may feel that they want change to be
instilled in their operating processes, but they are held back by their fear of
that same change.
Have you experienced any games or exercises
that help you practice change? Let us know some stories about this experience?
