Can I complete a Six Sigma Project if I’m without a job? (#39)

Can I complete a Six Sigma Project if I’m without a job?

We at SSDSI offer Onsite Lean Six Sigma Training and Public Lean Six Sigma Training. In those public trainings, we have many students that are unemployed. Being certified in the Lean and Six Sigma methodology gives people a huge resume boost. When up against other applicants, those with a Six Sigma certification are like hitting the jackpot!

Each of these students always asks how they can finish a Lean Six Sigma project if they currently do not have a job. A lot of people are hesitant to pay for a Lean Six Sigma course if they don’t have a job. They do not understand how they can complete a cost savings project if they’re not involved in a process driven environment.

Have no fear! There are plenty of companies who would be thrilled to have someone do a project for free. In this economy, a lot of organizations do not have the finances to hire a consultant to help with cost saving projects. Even if you do not work for that company, offering a “Pro Bono” Lean/Six Sigma project may land you a solid project foundation, and possibly a potential job.

Think about all of the non-profit organizations in your area. Homeless Shelters, Children’s Emergency Shelters, Food Banks, Boy Scouts, Churches, etc. There are so many organizations who may be struggling due to the fact that they do not have the resources to optimize their processes. A viable resource that you could provide for them, for free.

The Lean and Six Sigma methodology is not just for the employees of major companies; but the unemployed, the self-employed, the employees of small companies or nonprofits. It is for any person who can look at a process, see where improvements need to be made, and then act on it.

Do you know of any good options someone may have to complete a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt project when they’re not currently employed?
