A Yellow Belt Can Do What Now?! (#22)
One of the ways we at SSDSI facilitate the Lean Six Sigma
methodology is through Onsite Training. We will get multiple phone calls per
day from organizations who are inquiring for an instructor led, Lean Six Sigma Yellow
Belt training. We always ask these companies why they want to host this
training, to which they typically respond: “So our Yellow Belts can tackle
projects.” What they really mean, though, is this: “We’re only going to train
our employees for a couple of days and ask them to perform the same tasks a Green/Black
Belt would do.”
This is a fatal mistake. Lean Six Sigma Green Belts, Black
Belts, and Master Black Belts are considered Change Agents. What I mean by this
is that these certified belts are the ones who go into the organization and implement
the change to the Lean Six Sigma Methodology. Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belts are
not Change Agents. They should not tackle the project deployment. They are
considered the Subject Matter Experts who are trained as Yellow Belts to act as
a Lean Six Sigma project team member and should communicate and contribute data
to the Change Agents.
Each process has an “owner,” someone who knows
and works the process inside and out. The owner of the process is the Subject
Matter Expert (S.M.E.) and they will be the ground level soldiers for the project
deployment. The S.M.E/Yellow Belt is the most important team member because without
them, the Change Agent will have no perceptual understanding of the process.

Lean Six Sigma
Yellow Belt
This training is typically a two work day
training to teach the Subject Matter Experts the different tool sets they will
use in a Lean Six Sigma deployment. Here is a list of some of the tools taught
in a Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Class:
- Lean/Six Sigma Deployment Roles
- Project Charter
- Project Selection
- Process Mapping
- Input Prioritization
- Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA)
- Statistics
- Process Control
Have you been trained as a Yellow Belt and
then expected to tackle a Lean Six Sigma Deployment? Let us know your thoughts!
