What is the First Step To Lean Six Sigma Certification? (#2)
- Everyday, I will answer emails and phone calls from people who are interested to know what the first step towards receiving a Green Belt or Black Belt Certification is. Many people are interested in attaining a Lean Six Sigma Certification for a boost for their resume or to help them progress within their current organization. These are wonderful goals to have! However,a lot of students who begin the expedition towards Certification do not actually complete the journey.
- We compare this problem to “using a fire hose to fill up a tea cup.” When students look at the requirements for attaining a Green Belt or Black Belt Certification, they feel overwhelmed. This feeling is the main source of incomplete Certifications. When student’s feel overwhelmed, they procrastinate completing their projects which leads to incomplete requirements and missed deadlines.
- What can you do to deter from incomplete Projects? You must first learn how to crawl before you can walk. Typically, people progress through formal education by succeeding grade school with high school and after that, following up with some sort of higher education, i.e. college or technical school. A Lean Six Sigma Certification is no different. Each level of a Lean Six Sigma education should be taken in steps. Our suggestion to start your journey towards achieving a Green Belt or Black Belt Certification would be to first earn your Lean Six Sigma White Belt Certification.
- Our website, sixsigmadsi.com,describes the White Belt Course as an introduction to the foundation principles of the Lean establishment with a preliminary instruction to Six Sigma through instruction of an interactive course. It is in this course that you will learn the symbiosis between Lean and Six Sigma and how these methodologies coexist to provide an Overall Process Improvement Strategy.
- The White Belt Certification Course is a four hour course that is followed by an exam. Once complete and sufficiently passed, you will receive your Lean Six Sigma White Belt Certificate. A huge achievement and the first step towards your final goal! You can either move on to the Yellow Belt Certification, or stop with your White Belt achievement. Even if you stop at a White Belt Certification, having this under your belt is a big resume booster for future employment.
- If you complete a White Belt Certification course, will you be adding more class time towards earning your Green Belt Certification than if you were to start with a Green Belt Course? This is a pretty frequent question I receive from students and my answer to this question is no. Many training companies, like Six Sigma Development Solutions, Inc. use a modular format to teach each course. To define our understanding, the White Belt Certification course is the first four hours of the 40 hour Green Belt Course. In simpler terms, the White Belt Certification is stage 1 towards your Master Black Belt Certification. Keep in mind, however, that if you jump right into a Green Belt Course and do not finish, you will not have the White Belt Certification to show your accomplishment of those hours.
